Stop Losing Money on Currency Exchange

Currency exchange is where travelers quietly bleed money. You don't notice it because it happens a few percent at a time — but over a two-week trip, those percentages add up to a full day's budget, or more.

Trap one: dynamic currency conversion (DCC). When an ATM or card terminal asks if you want to be charged in your home currency, always say no. Choosing local currency lets your bank do the conversion at a near-market rate; choosing your home currency lets the merchant's bank do it at a terrible rate. This single choice can save you 5% on every transaction.

Trap two: airport and tourist-area exchange counters. Their rates are the worst in the country and the fees are hidden. Pull cash from a bank ATM in town instead, and if you must exchange physical notes, find a licensed money changer away from the airport and compare a few rates.

Trap three: ATM fees. Use a card that refunds international ATM fees, and withdraw larger amounts less often — each withdrawal has a fixed fee on top of the percentage. Just keep the cash safe.

Finally, know the rate before you arrive. Wander Wallet's currency converter pulls live rates, so you can check what your money is worth before you hand any over. When the street vendor says 50,000 for that shirt, you'll instantly know if it's $3 or $30 — and negotiate accordingly.
