Packing Light: Save Money and Stress

Packing Light: Save Money and Stress

Every extra kilo in your bag costs you money and freedom. Baggage fees, airport waits, the physical drag of a heavy suitcase through cobblestone streets — it all adds up. Packing light isn't a minimalism aesthetic; it's a practical budget and sanity hack.

The rule: one carry-on, one small backpack, and that's it. For a two-week trip or a two-month trip, the packing list is nearly identical. You don't need more for longer — you need clothes that wash and dry fast.

The kit: 5 t-shirts, 2 pairs of pants (one quick-dry), 5 pairs of socks and underwear, 1 light fleece, 1 packable rain shell, 1 versatile dress or shirt for nicer evenings, toiletries in a hanging kit, and one pair of shoes you can walk all day in. Roll everything. Use packing cubes. Done.

What you save: checked bag fees ($30-60 per flight), the time standing at baggage claim, and the anxiety of a lost bag. What you gain: the ability to hop on a scooter, walk to a cheaper hostel, or change plans without wrestling 20 kilos.

The trick that makes it work: laundry. A sink, some travel soap, and a clothesline cost almost nothing and let you travel indefinitely out of a carry-on. Every hostel and guesthouse offers laundry service for a few dollars if you'd rather not.
